I know people are divided over scanlines but I think it's meant to be played with them. For fans of arcade games, this manages to evoke the smell of cigarette ash and the dark corner of some seafront dive quite nicely.. Exccelent and challenging. Inspired by the shooters of the 80's. Short levels, a forgettable soundtrack, and a thoroughly inconsistent difficulty curve keep this otherwise competant shoot-em-up from reaching the same heights of the games it clearly pays tribute towards.. Gradius, Lifeforce, and R-Type, all memories from my childhood suddenly brought back to life. "The SNES game that never was" Super Hydorah is the perfect addition to the side scolling non-bullet hell shoot 'em up genre that was so popular in decades past. I can't praise this game or the developer highly enough. This game screams quality of the highest order in both graphics, sound, gameplay, art, and animation. If it was 1990 these devs would have six figure salaries at Konami.This game is almost perfect but if I could make one change it would be limiting the available continues to 3. Super Hydorah is a fantastic horizontal shoot 'em up with varied levels and weapons, a killer soundtrack and great graphics. As a fan of games like R-Type and Gradius / Parodius I'm very happy that this game exists and even more that the old freeware version got the "Super" treatment. While the game borrows many elements from classic titles, it feels fresh and unique. Unlike most other shooters of this kind, Super Hydorah supports analog controls. At first I wasn't a fan of this, but after a while I got used to it and even with maxed out speed upgrades you can still maneuver precisely. There are also secrets to find in each stage.Shoot 'em up veterans will have no problems blazing through the game and even a 1CC run is achievable for most players. That's not to say that the game is easy. The levels are challenging, but fair. Checkpoints within levels and a save system after each stage help newcomers. There are unlimited continues, but if you run out of lives you get send back to the start of the level. Some stages are pretty long and new players might have some trouble beating them. But with the right combination of weapons, sub weapons and bombs every stage and boss can be conquered.. I never played a shmup before but this game has set the bar really high. Its hard but fun. You will need to memorize the levels in order to get through. If you run out of lives the continue system lets you get back to the same level. Music is good and the game looks beautiful. The weapons and secrets make the game even better. It feels like every design choice was well made. The only thing that felt off is that the hardest level for me was in the middle of the game. I strongly reccomend this game to people who don't mind a challenge.. It's simple really: I'm thankful there are people out there who make games with this much dedication, earnestness, and attention to detail. It doesn't matter whether you like shmups; buy this if you like gaming.
